Built to last, anchored in tradition, and providing cutting edge solutions, TBS is proud to celebrate a Century of Solutions.
In 1913, upon graduation from Tulane University, T. Baker Smith, C.E. (Baker) returned to his home in Terrebonne Parish to begin his professional career as a civil engineer
. Today, Kenneth Wm. Smith, P.E., P.L.S. is unwavering in his dedication to carrying on the tradition begun by his grandfather and developed by his father, Wm. Clifford Smith, P.E., P.L.S. (Clifford). As president of the civil engineering firm that bears his grandfather’s name – T. Baker Smith, LLC (TBS)
– his aspiration is to provide superior, integrated, professional solutions
across a broad spectrum of markets
in multiple geographic regions.
Between 1913 and 2013
, TBS developed and grew from a one man surveying and civil engineering operation "into one of the top 500 engineering, architectural, and environmental design firms in the United States,”
according to Engineering News Record
Baker’s appreciation for the community and the outdoors motivated him to help build the early infrastructure in the southeast region of Louisiana, which included construction management of roads, bridges, and utilities systems
. He became an expert at the accurate reconstruction of U. S. government surveys, dating back to the late 1800s, along the south Louisiana coast between the Mississippi and the Atchafalaya rivers. He forged ties to the oil and gas industry
that have sustained the firm to the present. From the beginning, TBS' clients were among the industry’s largest and most successful pioneers. For more than eighty years, TBS has been actively involved in staking out leases, mapping pipeline rights-of-way, managing permits, and resolving numerous other regulatory issues
Baker’s son, Clifford, upon graduating from Louisiana State University in the 1950s, succeeded him in the business, expanding operations to include integrated solutions in environmental science and regulatory compliance, and land development
. As the oil and gas industry developed, he pursued near and offshore surveying; civil, structural and coastal engineering; and program management
In 1980, Kenneth joined the family business after graduating from Louisiana Tech University, and became President and CEO in 2001. He soon developed Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
, hydrographic surveying
, marine positioning
, urban planning
, and oyster assessment services
to grow and develop the firm. Beginning in 2002, he expanded the firm geographically by adding TBS office locations
in Thibodaux, Lafayette, and Baton Rouge, LA and Houston, TX, and more recently adding Shreveport, LA and San Antonio, TX.
Kenneth said, "I am proud and honored to carry my grandfather and father’s legacy into the next century. Myself and the 300 plus professionals and support staff
stand upon the shoulders of these two men and the thousands of good people who worked alongside of them to make us who we are today.”
