Coastal Engineer

Primary Position Location: Galveston, Houston, TX

T. Baker Smith, LLC is seeking a highly talented licensed Professional Civil Engineer with expertise in water resources, coastal and/or marine structural engineering for immediate opportunities throughout the Texas Gulf coast.

Experience working with the Texas General Land Office (GLO) and/or Louisiana Coastal Restoration and Protection Authority (CPRA) coastal programs, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (particularly Galveston District) or other NGO coastal restoration partners and stakeholders along the Texas Gulf coast is a plus.

As a valued member of the TBS team, you will:

  • Work within a team of professionals to develop civil engineering plans and specifications for a variety of water-related projects involving flood protection, gravity and forced drainage systems, shoreline stabilization, habitat restoration and various BUDM applications and/or marine structures.
  • Manage all aspects of a project, but specifically responsible for technical design and plan and specification production.
  • Mentor and empower project team members and serve as a technical design expert.
  • Contribute to, and actively engage in, the refinement and implementation of the firm’s marketing strategy and business growth plan for the public works and industrial markets throughout the Texas Gulf coast.
  • Evaluate, secure funding, design, and help construct infrastructure.
  • Provide regulatory compliance and environmental efforts for Clients with Coastal Infrastructure.

 

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum 8-year Texas-licensed professional engineer (P.E.) with marine structural engineering designing and administering construction of coastal projects.
  • MS in Ocean/Coastal Engineering is a plus.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate clearly with clients and fellow associates.
  • Experience monitoring and controlling costs.
  • Proven skills in public works civil design, problem solving, and project management.
  • Experience solving moderately complex problems and will be expected to apply new perspectives on existing solutions.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is not required, but favorable.
  • Project management experience, including the development of project proposals, scopes, budgets, and the successful execution and tracking of both small and large engineering projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D is a plus.

 

Desired Technical Experience:

  • Broad-based civil engineering experience with a water and/or marine structural emphasis with a focus on flood protection, gravity and forced drainage systems and/or flood/water control structures as necessary for feasibility analyses, engineering design, and permitting.
  • Proven hydrology, hydraulics, drainage design experience.
  • An understanding of data collection and interpretation of engineering data, model development, surface water hydrodynamics, and interpretation of modeling results, graphics development and report preparation.
  • Experience with flood/water control, gates and/or port infrastructure is a plus.
  • Broad-based coastal engineering and coastal processes experience with a focus on shoreline stabilization, habitat restoration and various BUDM applications, and/or coastal structures as necessary for feasibility analyses, engineering design, and permitting.
  • An understanding of Metocean conditions, modeling of nearshore hydrodynamics, sediment transport and barrier island morphology.
  • Experience with various coastal erosion response features including beach nourishment, shoreline revetment and breakwater systems, and structural applications.
  • An understanding of geotechnical considerations for coastal features including scour, settlement, slope stability, soil interaction with marine structures, and self-weight consolidation of hydraulically placed dredged material.
