The Challenge
Whiskey Island, one of five islands that comprise the Isles Dernieres barrier island chain, is essential to protecting human populations, oil and gas infrastructures, and wetland habitats in Louisiana. The goal for the Whiskey Island Back Barrier Marsh Creation Project (TE-50) was to increase the island’s width, elevation, and structural integrity.
The Solution
TBS was involved in all phases of the project, providing surveying, engineering, environmental, and construction administration services. The project created approximately 319 acres of marsh platform, 4,967 linear feet of primary dikes, 11,800 linear feet of secondary dikes, and nourished approximately 95 acres of beach/island area. The total quantity of material placed on the island was computed to be approximately 2,300,000 cubic yards of marsh fill and 236,784 cubic yards of dune fill.
