Survey Instrument Operator

Position Location: Lafayette, La

If you love the outdoors, T. Baker Smith, LLC is seeking a Survey Instrument Operator who specializes in field operations and has a desire to grow in the world of forestry, geomatics, and engineering.

Your Opportunity:

  • Review project requirements with the party chief.
  • Participate in daily job safety analysis.
  • Participate in daily tailgate safety meetings.
  • Gather necessary equipment and supplies to fulfill project requirements.
  • Operate necessary survey instruments to fulfill project requirements.
  • Compile notes, sketches, and records of survey data obtained.
  • Communicate with field operations lead on daily crew assignments.
  • Communicate findings of field survey with party chief.
  • Train survey aides to operate survey instruments.
  • Complete safety observation report as required.
  • Report incidents to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete incident report as required.
  • Monitor work conditions and responsibly use stop work authority.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with clients in the field.
  • Perform work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Assist in scheduling routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Identify and report any equipment failure on work order maintenance form.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma OR its equivalent, plus a minimum of one-year related work experience.
  • Ability to operate electronic distance measuring equipment and other surveying instruments, boats, airboats, GPS, all-terrain vehicles, and other equipment necessary to obtain survey data.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

 

Physical/Environment Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is frequently required to stand; walk long distances while carrying equipment, sometimes through rugged terrain, mud, or swamp; drive and/or ride in a boat; sit;  balance,  stoop,  kneel,  and  lift  up  to  50  pounds;  use  hands  to  operate,  handle,  maneuver  and/or manipulate  objects,  tools  or controls;  reach  with  hands  and  arms;  use  manual  dexterity  to  operate equipment; talk and hear; Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is generally outdoors and is exposed to the weather. Associates ride in a boat and are frequently exposed to the noise, dust, smells, and other environmental factors present in such situations. Nights away from home are required.
