The Challenge
TBS was tasked with gathering laser scanning data on both lanes and beneath the New Orleans Causeway, including pile caps and piles. The client’s initial plan involved using a "jack-up" barge, a time-consuming, costly, and potentially hazardous method.
The Solution
TBS mobilized a 3-person crew at night from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. to conduct laser scan surveys of the above deck Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge. TBS also arranged for lane closures utilizing Traffic Solutions and arranged for police escort utilizing the Causeway Police. The final laser scan point cloud data was utilized to create a 3D model for engineering design of the safety bays. TBS fabricated an articulating pole that mounted to the survey vehicle to capture laser scan data beyond the handrail underneath the Causeway, allowing for pile and foundation capture.
